Who was Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore? (8 August 1605 – 30 November 1675)

Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore (8 August 1605 – 30 November 1675), elder son of the 1st baron, George Calvert. After Cecil Calvert father’s death, the charter for Maryland was issued to Cecilius.

He is considered the real founder of Maryland, and, although he never visited the region, he sent settlers there under his brother Leonard Calvert and after its settlement supervised the affairs of the colony from England.

As the first lord proprietor of Maryland, Calvert founded the colony as a haven where Roman Catholic and other religious groups could worship without being persecuted.
