Edward Fitzgerald “Ned” Beale (February 4, 1822 A.D – April 22, 1893 A.D), American naval officer, courier, and pioneer, born in Washington, D.C., and educated at the U.S. Naval Academy. In 1846 A.D, shortly after the outbreak of the Mexican War, He was assigned to duty with the troops commanded by General Stephen Watts Kearny.
Kearny’s troops were surrounded at San Pasquah, California, on December 6, 1846 A.D, and Beale, accompanied by the American scout Kit Carson and a Native American guide, succeeded in crossing the Mexican lines and obtaining help.Between 1847 A.D and 1849 A.D Edward Fitzgerald Beale crossed the continent six times as a federal courier.
On the second crossing (1848 A.D) He is said to have carried the first authentic report of the discovery of gold in California. He was appointed superintendent of Indian affairs for California and Nevada in 1852 A.D and made several surveys of proposed railway and highway routes in the West.
